The Mustard Seed
Ness Bank,Inverness

We visited the Mustard Seed during the early evening in October 2005. It is in quite a nice, city location. It is right next to the river and we could get street parking close by.
The staff were very polite and attentive. We found the menu interesting but limited for vegetarians and vegans. They said they could do better with notice.
We think there was just one vegan starter - melon fan - prettily done.
There was just one dish that would adapt for a vegan on the evening meal menu but they did let us choose to adapt another option from the early evening menu (which normally finishes at 7pm).

The two adaptations simply ommitted the cheese. We were not offered a substitute protein (nuts or beans or tofu etc) in place of the cheese.

The food was very nice, well cooked and nicely presented by friendly staff. We asked for and received an extra portion of side vegetables .
The staff did ask the chef if here was a vegan sweet suitable but he said no.

One starter, 2 main courses, one water and a glass of wine £28 ish .

Comments
The food was of an excellent quality but opening a tin of chickpeas, butter beans or cooking some asparagus or some cashews ... any of these would have been a thoughtful and satisfying addition to the cheeseless dishes. Everyone else had lots of meat dishes to choose from and it's not as if beans or nuts are a highly perishable ingredient that can't be stored..

Stocking Swedish Glace vegan icecream, Rock n Roll Tofutti Viennetta would go halfway towards a pud for vegan customers. Soya Dream Cream, Maple syrup on some hot berries or apple..... not difficult even in a busy kitchen.
The ambience was very pleasing and the restaurant was busy. Yes we would go again - we would give warning of our vegan preferences. If we had taken friends who were meat eaters they might have been embarrassed by our lack of options and vote not to go again .... food for thought. However, ... we will try it again.
