We visited the Tomich Hotel June 39th 2007

The hotel is about 45 minutes from Inverness and 25 minutes from Drumnadrochit. It is a traditional stone built hotel and was the Victorian Hunting Lodge for Lord Tweedmouth’s Guisachan estate in the latter half of the 1800’s.

We had given the owners 2 days notice that 3 vegans wanted an evening meal. We were made very welcome on a busy Saturday night so all the more credit due to them for offering 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 desserts. We agreed the staff were attentive, knowledgeable and friendly.

We tasted each others food and agreed unanimously on our top favourites. The following pictures and descriptions are placed in the order of our preference but it is fair to say that even the dishes placed at number 3 were very acceptable. It's just that we really liked the number 1 dishes!

Vegan Creamed Mushrooms

Starter 1 - TOP FAVOURITE
Creamed Mushrooms on Toast
with salad garnish

Made with vegan cream - rich flavour and satisfying. Yum

Starter 2 - JOINT SECOND PLACE
Lentil Pate
with oatcakes and salad

Lentil pate with a pleasing hint of spice - nicely presented

Starter 3 - JOINT SECOND PLACE
Parsnip and Apple Soup
Brown bread and spread

Very fine flavour - a nice light soup

Vegan Crumble

Main 1 - TOP FAVOURITE
Vegetable Crumble
Well flavoured filling that included nuts and vegetables with an excellent crumble topping - with new potatoes, fine beans, carrots and baby sweet corn.

Main Protein - nuts

Main 2 - SECOND PLACE
Stuffed Peppers
Rice and pinenut stuffing with new potatoes, fine beans, carrots and baby sweet corn

Nice moist filling - tasty and satisfying

Main Protein - Pinenuts

Vegan Curry

Main 3 - Third Place
Thai Vegetable Curry with rice and popadom (not shown) and mango chutney.

This dish is off the usual menu and so is available all the time. It had a nice flavour but would have been improved by adding some beans or nuts for texture and protein.

Vegan ginger pudding Dessert 1 - FAVOURITE
Ginger Pudding and vegan custard

Served hot and was very tasty and satisfying - we would all have liked lots!

fruit and vegan ice-cream Dessert 2 - SECOND PLACE
Fresh fruit and Swedish Glace Ice-cream

Good selection of prettily prepared fresh fruits with very welcome vegan ice-cream with nuts on top. Lovely.
brandied peaches Dessert 3 - THIRD PLACE
Brandied Peaches with soya cream

A really nice surprise to be offered vegan cream on a dessert!
Comments

The ambience was very pleasing and we all felt so relaxed because this hotel knew what to provide and seemed as pleased to see us as any of their other diners.

Choices! It's really unusual to be allowed to actually choose meal when we go out. In most restaurantswe are expected to take the single option the chef has decided wewill love, pay for it and be grateful!

If you are going out to Drumnadrochit or to Beauly then take a lovely drive up to Glen Affric, walk the walks and come back via the Tomich. Book first or call them if you want the best they can do.
